If you think that maintaining a happy relationship with your partner would be the most challenging part of your married life, think again; as you might have to deal with some in law problems as well.
Though they may not mean it, but some in-laws have tendencies to be bossy or overbearing which can cause tension and stress for both sides. To deal with in law problems, here are some tips one can follow.
From day one, you need to build a solid foundation between you and your in-laws. This can be done by having them involved with several family events like watching their grandson’s football game or attending their granddaughter’s ballet recital. Even as simple as attending church can be a good way to have stronger ties with your in-laws. Some of the conflicts and tension between you and your in-laws can be attributed with having no communication whatsoever. Being open with one another can resolve any in law problems by addressing any issues head on.
For instance, if you feel that your father-in-law disregards your views or opinions, approach him and tell him in a respectful manner that you want him to take you more seriously and make an effort to at least listen to what you have to say. This works two ways since you were able to address a concern between you and your father-in-law while at the same time being admired for your honesty.
Next would be to firmly set boundaries especially when it comes to raising your child. There are times when in-laws would bypass some of the rules you have enforced to your kids. This would create confusion on the kids and could undermine your authority with them. When this happens, what you need to do is explain first to your child why the rules you have set needs to be followed. Then talk to your in-laws and respectfully explain to them that rules you have needs to be strictly followed at all times. It would also work best of you have your spouse involved as well to set an impression that this type of behavior affects the whole family.
And lastly, make sure to address all in law problems the first time they occur. Do not let it develop into something wherein either side might harbor ill-feelings towards the other. Remember, problems with in-laws usually start small but then becomes a big issue if left unaddressed.
