Money Matters In Marriage

They say that love makes the world go round. Well, maybe the one who said might want to see the world today. Money makes the world go round especially in marriage.

Whether you like it or not, money plays a great role in marriage. Yes, there are a lot of expenses to be paid and preparations to spend your money with when the wedding comes but that is not all; the couple should consider that their whole life and especially their future will need money. When they have kids, what will they use to raise them and give them a good life? Love? That is important but money will keep them alive. When it comes to the real world, there is no ‘we only need each other’.

Money matters in marriage are very important since these matters will affect your whole lives. Keep in mind that when you get married, the two of you will join forces together physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. Like it or not, your beliefs and philosophies will be merged with his or hers.

You do not have to be a financial expert to survive money matters when you get married. Here are some tips to help you out regarding this matter for the rest of your life:

  1. Understand your and your partner’s money philosophies and learn how to make it work. The way you earn, spend and manage your money plays a great role in your financial life. These philosophies may have been acquired in the past and these should be understood and not judged. Learn to merge your philosophies and make it work.
  2. Talking about money should be done from time to time. If one or both of you are raised in a family where money matters are not discussed, it is time for you to open this topic up and communicate.
  3. Do not forget to set boundaries. Putting up a budget is good but being tight always is not acceptable. Being flexible can be very beneficial when it comes to money matters. When something is not working out, you need to change it. When something needs to be added, add it. And do not deprive yourselves from your desires. Just make sure to prioritize.
  4. Keep track and record what you spend and how much did you spend. Keep receipts and list down what you have spent then evaluate if you are still on the budget.
  5. Being together in everything is good but when it comes to money, a matter of financial freedom wouldn’t hurt. Actually, the feeling of having your own money can make you feel independent and free. It can boost your confidence and give you personal power.
  6. Learn to consult with each other regarding purchases especially if it is a big one. Open it to your partner and think about what he or she thinks about it.
  7. Do not just stick to what you know but learn. There are a lot of financing options that can make money work for you. Just do not conceal yourself into little decisions.
  8. It is good to have an account that belongs to both you and to have an individual account to keep financial independence balance.
  9. In the future, you will need a lot of money so it is better to start saving now and invest your money to something worthwhile. This way, you can avoid having financial problems later on.
  10. Financial and marital issues are different. Many couples blame money for the other problems they have. Learn to distinguish issues from one another.

Though money matters are important, do not make it the center of your relationship. Think of why you are together and stick on that.
